SAFETY WHILE YOUR CHILD IS ALONE

Is your child ready to be left alone? Is she or he ready to go home after school, are they teenagers?   Detection:

• Approved single station or multiple-station smoke detectors continuously powered by the house electrical service should be installed in accordance with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code. Many Codes allow battery-powered detectors to be used in existing construction, but require ac-powered detectors for new constructions.
• A control panel and associated equipment, multiple-or-single station alarm devices, or any combination thereof can be used to form a household fire warning system in one and two family dwellings.
• Sinlge-station smoke detectors should be interconnected only within an individual living unit. Remote annunciation from single-station detectors can be permitted.
• Ideally, smoke detectors should be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the family living unit, including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
• In family living units with more than one sleeping area, a smoke detector should be provided to protect each separate sleeping area. In NEW CONSTRUCTION ” additional smoke detector are required within each bedroom.

SMOKE DETECTOR LOCATION, SPACING AND INSTALLATION:

• The major threat from fire in a family living unit is at night when everyone is at sleep. The principal threat to persons in sleeping areas from fires in the remainder of the unit; therefore, smoke detectors are best located between the bedroom areas and the rest of the unit.
• Units with only one bedroom area on one floor, the smoke detector should be located in the hallway. ( I shall explain this at the end of the article)*. For family living units with one or more split levels(i.e, adjacent levels with less than one full story separation between levels), a smoke detector should be suffice for an ajacent lower level, including basement.
• In new construction, the model building codes and NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, now require smoke detectors within the sleeping rooms. These provide bedroom occupants protection from a fire starting within that bedroom where the door to that bedroom is closed. A smoke detector outside the bedroom provides protection to others, but is ineffective for those in the room of origin. Further, since smoke detectors in new construction are required to be interconnected, so that when one alarms it sounds all of the smoke detectors, the audibility of the entire system is enhanced along with the ability of the system to awaken even the soundest sleeper.
• Certain guidlines should be followed for locations of smoke detectors in certain areas of the home. In rooms with ceiling slopes greater than 1ft rise per 8ft(0.3 m rise per 2.4 m) horizontally, smoke detectors should be located at the high side of the room. Smoke detectors should be located on or near the ceiling whenever practical. A smoke detector install in a stairwell should be located so smoke rising in the stairwell cannot be prevented from reaching the smoke detector by an inter vening door or obstruction.
• A smoke detector installed in a the basement should be located in close proximity to the stairway leading to the floor above. A smoke detector installed to protect a sleeping area should be located outside of the bedrooms but in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping area. And, a smoke detector installed on a story without a separate sleeping area should be located in close proximity to the stairway leading to the floor above.
• Smoke detectors and heat detectors should be installed in those locations recommended by the manufacturer, except when the space above the ceiling is open to the outside and little or no insulation is present over the ceiling. This results in ceiling temperatures that are cold in winter and hot in the summer. Where the ceiling is significantly different in temperature from the air space below, smoke and heat has difficulty reaching the ceiling and to a detector that may be placed there. If a detector must be installed in these conditions, placement of the detector on a side wall, with the top 4 to 12 inches(0.1 to 0.3 m) from the ceiling, is preferred.

    * From the second  paragraph with the Astrix I will like to explain that in a common sleeping area according to the old CODE, one smoke detector was place outside of the sleeping areas, this could be 2-3 bedrooms, now in the new CODE a smoke detector is required to be in each bedroom and one shall be install adjacent to all 2 or 3 common bedroom area. In other words when you step outside from the bedroom there will be a common smoke etector placed for the other rooms. Now if the rooms where far apart in a hall way more than 20-30′ another smoke detector will be required.

• There is a problem with your Bank account, it can be an e-mail or a phone call and they will request your social security number, and for you to verify your account number, do not fall for it, if you think it sounds real go to the bank and see for yourself.
• Jury Duty scam, a call from the city and they asked that you verify information about yourself, and the reason is that there is a warrant for your arrest and while at that moment you try to defend yourself by claiming that you did not received any mail for you to report for a jury duty, the caller, try to calm you down by asking you to verify your social security number and a drivers license number, and you will have to pay a small fine, with your credit card number and if you do………….
• A fellow approachesyou and tell you that they work for an appliance store that sell flat TV, but because they like you and by the way, “they”, the store manager and them sell TV on the side for half the cost of what the store sell it, they will even go as far as to go to the store with you and while he is talking to the store manager, you should signal him so he can point to the store manager at the flat Screen that you want,  which make everything is going as planed, he will then approach you and asked if he can talk to you outside the store, let say the TV cost $600.00 and you were going to get it for half the cost, he will ask you for cash and he does not want anyone inside the store to see you exchanging cash with him. As you hand him the cash, he will tell you to go and wait by the “PICKUP” or “will call” and the TV will be deliver to you by one of the store boys, if you fall for it………………….

You have to constantly be on your guard when you deal with anyone that is demanding money from you and they are in such a hasty manner, they give you few seconds to think or the deal is off or they want money up front. People do fall for such cons, think before you ever answer or give any information about yourself to a stranger in the street or a phony email.

Remember this tip, Banks will not ask you to verify your account, if you did not buy a lotto ticket there is no chance for you to win, someone finding cash will not want to share it with anyone and if they were honest, they will ask you to check if you lose any cash and if you do, they will ask you about how much money did you lose.
