I have several articles written on remote viewing and felt that they were not just good enough, so here I go again to try to explain it as simple as possible. The word remote Viewing is the ability to view your cameras from any available Internet computer in the World. The subject is in a way simple but because it involves other devices such as a Router, Firewalls, Computer after market Virus/spy ware, other computers and maybe you are using just a regular dial up to get into the Internet. I know the feelings of installing your system and you can see the cameras on your local Network but when you type the address on the browser nothing happens, the message is “page cannot be found or display”. I know that this is also frustrating, after all whats the big problem.
Let’s talk about your computer without the remote view connection, when a computer is setup to go into the Internet, your host Internet page will first appear, and from there you can get to other web pages. Your Firewall and with the help of your Internet host server constantly protect your computer from receiving malicious Viruses or spy ware from other web sites. Your ISP or host takes certain caution to deliver you email that may be problematic to your computer. The port number 80, which was used for remote viewing seem not to work because the ISP is also using that port number for other purpose and therefore it is blocked. Another Interesting facts is your IP address will constantly change, while the local IP address on the same computer stays the same. All of this were to protect your computer from Hackers, imagine what will happen to all our computers, we will be in some serious trouble. Then here comes the router, it takes complete control of your computer, it assigned the address that your computer will have. The router is liken to a door that only accept very few items from the Internet, while all others will be block. It is like going to the Bank and deposit money no big deal right, but if you will like to withdraw then all of a sudden you need to know the account number, produce IDs, signatures will have to match, your PIN number as your password on the very same account that you just deposited money into. The very same is as for your computer, as long as you log into the Internet and go to any page you want, no problem all, you type the page on the browser and that page loads up, while you are on the Internets there are those who also try to log into your computer and are refused to because of the setup of your computer from the Router.
For your Internet Camera, DVR, DVR cards or Internet security camera software to work, you will have to enable your router or nothing will happen. Internet Cameras will come with a CD or some software that will configured the system to function as an Internet device. Knowing your IP address is a plus, you can go to your “Start Button” and look and click on the word ”RUN”. When that shows up type in cmd or command and click enter. A small black screen will show up and wait until the box is fully up and type in ipconfig and press the enter button and look for the computer’s ip address. Now an easier way of doing this is just type in your web browser www.whatismyipaddress.com to obtain your IPaddress. ( WAIT )!!!…..why two different ip- addresses?…… the ip address on your computer will be different from what the Internet says your IP Address is. Whenever you go Internet your computer announces it address which other servers will know, you have a choice to setup a Static address that will always stays the same or you can apply for a name that stays the same while the numerical valve will change( www.dyndns.com). If you have a Router, you will also have to setup a port number to be forwarded when a request from an outside computer signs into it. When you setup the router the system will automatically set up the firewall to accept a log from outside. If you have a personal Virus/spy ware installed in your computer checked if you can setup it up to allow a remote viewing, because you could have all the other devices setup and your local software denies your remote viewing. You see to get to your computer is very difficult, because your personal information could be ruined if the wrong person could easily get them. You can use camera software that can convert your computer into a crafty sly spy machine that will alert you and let you see what happen while you where away. Another way is have someone with computer experience to set it up for you and my advice is also to watch how they do it in the event your computer is restored to factory defaults. You will also need to setup administrator password to log into your computer. Nevertheless it is not as hard as it seem, you just need to understand how it works.
